FRANCES LEE

Frances Lee was introduced to tenpins with the opening of Fair Lanes Twinbrook in 1958 after having been a duckpin bowler in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Fran was introduced to the Washington, D.C. Area Women‘s Bowling Association by Millie Paddock, and she served on the Hospitality Committee for several years before being elected as a director. After being elected to the board, she served each year on the Budget Committee. Other committees that were most meaningful to her included: Lane Representatives, Industry Relations, Ways and Means, Audit, Building, Seniors, Criteria, BVL, and the special committee for both local bids made for the WIBC Tournament. Fran helped out on some other special projects, too. When it was suggested that the board obtain jackets, she worked with Dottie Mendenhall on the matter. When Martha Burton needed someone to serve on an Audit Committee for the Virginia State, Fran answered the call. ln addition, she took part in and completed the WIBC Leadership Course, and also worked with members of the men’s association at the BOWL Magazine Tournament. She started the Queens Tournament, which was held in conjunction with the WDCAWBA City Tournament, and in later years she conducted some side tournaments, including No Tap and Crazy Eights. Several times, Fran has been a delegate to the Virginia State Convention and the WIBC Convention, where she once served as a teller. Fran sewed as Chaplin and Parliamentarian, and she twice was the recipient of the President’s Award. After leaving the board (her full-time employment and other personal affairs prevented her from remaining), Fran has served as nominating chairman and head teller/teller at several open meetings. On the lanes, her highs include a 171 average, a 234 game (six times, in fact!), and a 597 series. She has served in all offices in each of the leagues she has bowled in and currently is in her sixth year as president of the Monday Night Mixed Early Birds at Congressional Plaza. For her service to women's bowling in this area, a special spot has been reserved for Frances Lee in the Washington, D.C. Area Women's Bowling Association Hall of Fame.
