Bill Dodds has been an avid bowler since the early 1950s, when he helped form church leagues in Indianapolis, Indiana. When he arrived in the Washington, D.C. area in the early 1960s, he formed regular leagues at Bowl America Silver Hill, where he later served as a customer service representative before becoming assistant manager. Bill served as president of the long-running Thursday Night Handicap league at Silver Hill, which was renamed the Matt Bennie Memorial upon Bill’s motion to do so. He also served as secretary/treasurer of the Way Out league.
Bill joined the NCABA board in 1987 and shortly thereafter became chairman of the Awards Committee, which he has handled superbly for the past 11 years. As overall scoring has increased, so has the distribution of gold and silver pins and nearly all other awards. Bill’s committee work seemingly has become a full-time job, with 40-hour weeks often the norm and concerns about the award-winning bowlers and their league secretaries foremost in his mind.
He also has worked on the Hall of Fame, annual meeting, suspension, and YABA committees in addition to assisting at the annual NCABA Championship Tournament and many other association activities.
On the lanes, Bill averaged in the 170s before arthritis and other hand problems hindered, but have not curtailed, his league and tournament activities.
For his outstanding and untiring service to area bowlers, the Nation’s Capital Area Bowling Association reserves a special spot for Bill Dodds in its Hall of Fame.
