BETTY ALLEN

When the American Junior Bowling Congress asked that a junior association be formed in this area, Betty R. Allen and her husband, Eddie, were instrumental in forming the Vir-Mar District Junior Association. During her seven-year regime as President of the organization, many junior programs were initiated, including the 600 Club, awards, travel leagues, in-house workshops for coaches, and high school tournaments. She was among the area's first certified junior bowling coaches, served on the Virginia IBA Board for 10 years, and even did narration for two locally-televised bowling programs.

Her dedication to bowling was recognized, and she was elected to the WDCAWBA Board in 1965, serving the association well: Director (1965-1970), 4th Vice President (1971-1978), 1st Vice President (1979-83), and President (1984). From 1972-83, Betty also served as Assistant to the Secretary. In 1984 she held the additional position of Acting Secretary during Dee Carl's serious illness.

Last year, Betty was unanimously elected President for a three-year term. However, following the death of Dee Carl, she resigned her office, feeling that she could better serve the membership—and provide needed continuity to the WDCAWBA—in the office of Secretary. She was unanimously elected to a three-year term in this position earlier this year.

Betty has been involved in leag1le bowling since 1960, and she has served as league President (6 years), Secretary and Treasurer (16 years), and has worked on all league committees. Active in all local affairs, she also helped organize the Virginia Bowling Queens and served as its President for 7 years.

In passing, it must be mentioned that Betty was responsible for the installation and operation of the WIBC computer programs when adopted by the WDCAWBA in 1980.

She has participated in 21 WIBC conventions and workshops—20 as a delegate; 21 state conventions and workshops, 24 state tournaments, and an untold number of local seminars and workshops.

Betty was elected to the Virginia State Women's Bowling Association Board in 1972, where she has served as a Director (1972-78) and as Sergeant-at-Arms (1979 to date). She has chaired numerous VSWBA committees, including AJBC, Workshops, and Newsletter. She was also the official photographer for many years.

Nationally, she has participated in five WIBC Leader Training Seminars and four WIBC State Leaders Workshops. She has developed good rapport with the WIBC officers and is recognized by them as a diligent and dedicated officer.

On the lanes, Betty has a high average of 182, a 712 series, and a 265 single. She is a member of the State and National 600 Clubs, and a member of the National 700 Club.

Because of her dedication, her initiative, her knowledge, and her ability to work so well with the entire bowling community, Betty Allen will now deservedly gain a most honored position: a spot in the Washington, D.C. Area Women's Bowling Association Hall of Fame.
