February 10, 2006 — WDCAWBA Secretary Tena Boone today announced that the deadline to enter the 61st annual WDCAWBA City Tournament has been extended to Friday, February 17.
The event is scheduled for March 4-5, 11-12, and 18-19 at Bowl America Gaithersburg.

December 19, 2005 — The Washington, D.C. Area Women's Bowling Association yesterday announced that President Bernadine King died Saturday night, December 17.
King, 69, of Arlington, succeeded Barbara Vaughan as association president on September 1, 2004. This past April, King entered a hospital in Tulsa, Okla., prior to the Women's International Bowling Congress Annual Meeting in that city, and since that time First Vice President Jane Andrews of the District, who now succeeds King, has been acting president.
King is survived by her husband, Joel.
The viewing will take place at Murphy's Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Boulevard in Arlington, Va., on Wednesday, December 21 from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. The service will occur Thursday, December 22 at 11:30 a.m.
Association Secretary Quintenna Boone today announced that the WDCAWBA office will be closed Wednesday and Thursday this week in observance of the death of President King.
Join the Washington, D.C. Area Women’s Bowling Association on Sunday, February 5, 2006 at Bowl America Shirley, 6450 Edsall Road in Alexandria, for a two-game Scotch Doubles tournament to promote athletic participation for women and girls of all ages. There are five age divisions for girls ages 5 to 18. Each adult must pay $12, while the girls bowl for free.
To reserve a spot, please call the WDCAWBA office at 301/336-8400 before February 1. The tournament includes a lunch, fun, and surprises.

November 28, 2005 — Secretary Quintenna Boone today announced the holiday schedule for the WDCAWBA office, which will be closed on the following dates:
The 24th annual Senior Bowling Tournament, USBC certified and sponsored by the Washington, D.C. Area Women’s Bowling Association and the Nation’s Capital Area Bowling Association, was held at Bowl America Shirley on October 22-23 and 29-30. Over 300 bowlers participated in the team, doubles, singles, and all events categories.
In addition to the prize fund (one prize for each eight entries), bowlers earned a Senior Tournament 200 game pin, 4-bagger emblem, and new bowlers to the tournament were given a special Senior Tournament pin.
Trivia: Ages ranged from 55 to 83, while averages ranged from 103 to 221. The results of the tournament will be available on this site.

The winter league kits have been delivered to the bowling centers. Hopefully, each secretary or at least most of you has received the one for your league.
Do read your rule book; there are some changes regarding the number of games for award qualifications and award rule number changes (Rule 53 is now Rule 55, etc.). Rule changes are noted on page 5 of the Playing Rules book. Please take the time to read the changes.
The word “sanction” no longer applies. The replacement is certification, as in “certification application,” etc.
Remember to certify your league within the 30-day time limit.
Do fill in Section 12 of the league certification application. This secures bonding of your league funds in case of loss.
Ask all members and substitutes to fill out membership applications and forward them to the local association(s)—even if they’re certified in another league. Do not send requests to USBC; this will cause delay in certification of league members.
Request awards weekly for those who qualify. Do not wait until the end of your league season!
Presidents: Check the bank statements and account monthly. Not doing so could cause your league to lose bonded funds if the league should suffer a loss of funds.
Select a prize list by the fifth week of bowling. Do not choose a prize list just to have one; look over the proposals carefully for a fair and correct prize list.
Attend your association’s meetings—November 19, 2005 and in April 2006. Let your concerns be known.

Eugenia McDonald of Bowie was crowned "Suzy Bowler" during the opening ceremonies of the 60th annual WDCAWBA City Tournament at AMF Alexandria on March 5. She entered 13 teams in this year's event and received a sash, crown, bowling ball, bag, and shoes.

High scores at City Tournament - On the tournament's first squad of the second weekend, Susan King bowled a 300 game and a 717 series. Tiffany Franklin-Bell followed in the next squad with a perfect game and a 738 series. Meanwhile, Christine Martin had a 278 game and a 751 series, Quintina Jefferson scored 706, and WDCAWBA Hall of Famer Linda Elmore recorded 704, which gave us five 700-plus series for the tournament.
Other notable scores: Arlea Bowman, an 11 in-a-row 290 game; Cheryl Waller, 288; Hall of Famer A. Jane Hassell, 279; and Monica Bell, 278.

Bowl for the Cure — Patti Kay Dunlap, vice president of the CARA Sunday Night League at Bowl America Shirley, was asked to head the campaign for the "Bowl for the Cure" breast cancer fund-raiser. Being a cancer survivor, Patti Kay was happy to set this in motion. She created a nice flier for the league bowlers and started asking for donations on March 6.
Donations kept coming in from her league members and also from another league, the Sunday Night Mixed that bowls at the same time. A total amount of $5,000 has been sent to WIBC Headquarters.
The convention in Tulsa will feature a big screen that will display Bowl for the Cure donations from throughout the nation. You can be sure when "CARA Sunday Night League" shows up on that screen, there will be many cheers going up from the WDCAWBA delegation.

It was with deep sadness that the WDCAWBA board of directors announced the death of our dear friend and colleague Colleen Kennerly on December 30, 2004. Colleen became a director on August 1, 1991 and served our membership with distinction.
At every tournament-City, Senior, 3 C's, and Girls and Women in Sports-Colleen could be found at the check-in table or selling our wares at the Ways and Means table. She was very active on the Hall of Fame and Ranking committees and the Bernice Bennie League Secretary of the Year selections. She attended Virgina State Workshops and served as a delegate many times to the Virginia State Convention.
Colleen was always willing to help; if any committee needed assistance, she would be there on a moment's notice. She touched our lives, and we are each a better person for having had her as a friend and colleague. We extend our sincerest sympathy to her beloved husband Thomas and family. A poem printed on her Home Going Celebration program gave me much needed comfort that day.
I end by repeating that beautiful and heartwarming verse:

Representatives from WDCAWBA, NCABA, and the Vir-Mar-District YABA held a joint Transition to USBC meeting on January 8. WDCAWBA has signed and mailed the Letter of Intent to the Bowling Headquarters. We are currently working on a procedure to select our transition board members.

The WDCAWBA/NCABA annual BVL Kickoff was held Nov. 6 at the Fort Belvoir Bowling Center, where over $5,000 in pledges and donations was raised. Look for the WDCAWBA/NCABA lane representatives to visit your leagues in the near future. If you have already donated, we sincerely thank you.
On Nov. 10, I joined Carol Gauthier, Tom Dale Jr., and Ray Webb at a BVL check presentation made by the BVL board to Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi. The following day, First Vice President Jane Andrews, representing WDCAWBA, and Tom Dale Jr., representing NCABA, served as flag bearers at the ceremony held at Arlington National Cemetery. Our associations were very proud to be so honored.
The WDCAWBA Semiannual Meeting was held Nov. 13 at the Hampton Inn in Largo, Maryland. Newly elected and appointed officers and directors were installed during a ceremony conducted by Bea Bennie and Sharon Weber. Those installed besides myself as president included: Jane Andrews, first vice president; Sharon Brown, third vice president; Anita Barila, fourth vice president; Carol Gauthier, treasurer; and Hazel Beatty, Zemoria Hickerson, Hazel Wallace, Annie Davis, and Sharon Mills, directors. Delegates for the 2006 state and national conventions also were elected, and the membership voted to approve a merger with NCABA. We had a great turnout for this meeting, and hopefully the Annual Meeting in April 2005 will be well attended.
Bea Bennie, Sharon Weber, and I attended the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Workshop in Richmond on Nov. 20 that was well presented and very informative. Our Transition Committee will meet with NCABA officials the first week in December. USBC will officially launch on Jan. 1, 2005; the deadline for the Letter of Intent must be signed and submitted by May 31, 2005, with an agreement to charter with USBC by May 31, 2006. As of Dec. 31, 2004, WIBC, ABC, and YABA will no longer exist.
Entry forms for the 60th annual City Tournament, which will be held Mar. 5-6, 12-13, and 19-20 at AMF Alexandria, are being distributed to the bowling centers. If you do not see entry forms in your center, please call the association office at 301/336-8400, and we will mail one to you. Please get your teams together, send in your entries, and remember: The earlier you respond, the better chance you have of getting your requested dates. NCABA won the Memorial Trophy at the 22nd annual Matt Bennie Memorial 3 C's Tournament held August 14 at U.S. Bowling. The team of Richard Brown Jr., Larry "Bud" Smith, Mark Bennett, Ralph Hayward, and Earl Hickerson totaled 3,546 to top the WDCAWBA team by 47 pins.
Tavawyaha Batts of WDCAWBA and Richard Brown Jr. won the "Single Game Over Average" awards. In addition to WDCAWBA and NCABA, Vir-Mar-Dist YABA and local proprietors also were represented at this tournament.

For many years, the WDCAWBA office received complaints because the league secretary was required to submit a local award form and a WIBC award form to receive both awards; this was necessary because WIBC offered the traditional award or the bowler could select Pin Points for merchandise. The bowler was required to sign the WIBC form to indicate her choice of traditional award or Pin Points.
WIBC eliminated the Pin Point program with the end of the 2003-2004 season. WDCAWBA issued a new combined form in the 2004-2005 league kits, and we are still having problems because some secretaries still submit both forms and still complain about submitting "two" award forms.
If you are a league secretary and you do not understand the new form, please call the WDCAWBA office at 301/336-8400, and I will personally ensure that a representative from this office will come to your bowling center and explain the awards procedure to you. Also, the association office will continue to mail awards to the league secretary. If you would like to have those awards presented to the bowlers, please call your lane representative or the office to arrange an awards ceremony.

Welcome to the 2004-2005 bowling season. This should be an exciting season, namely 2005, since it marks WDCAWBA's 60th anniversary. As soon as the plans for celebrations are finalized, we will let you know.
Our semiannual meeting is scheduled for Saturday, November 13, at the Hampton Inn, 9421 Largo Drive West in Largo, Md. (next door to the WDCAWBA office). Many members have said they did not come to the meetings because they were always on Sunday. Hopefully, those of you who could not come on Sunday will be able to join us on this Saturday. The WDCAWBA board looks forward to seeing you there.

President Barbara Vaughan named me to chair a United States Bowling Congress Transition Committee consisting of Quintenna Boone, Tavawyaha Batts, Bernice Bennie, and Sharon Weber. We look forward to working in consonance with the NCABA Transition Committee.
We sadly bid farewell to directors Joan Cushman and Lillie Eason-White; their dedicated service to this board will be greatly missed. Meanwhile, we welcome new board member Jolita Perry, whose three-year term began August 1, 2004.
We also welcome our new WIBC members from Village Lanes in Leesburg, Va.
At the July board meeting, Kendra Gaines was selected as WDCAWBA's 2004 Hall of Fame inductee. The Hall of Fame Induction Dinner will be held October 9 at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington.
Thanks to those league secretaries who submitted their final averages on time. To the secretaries who did not and caused many phone calls to be made-with the last one to the bowling centers whose personnel accommodated our request for your final average sheets-all I can say is shame on the league president and the secretary for not fulfilling their duties. See the Playing Rules book beginning on page 28 for a description of duties for president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer.
Don't forget the Senior Tournament the last two weekends in October at Bowl America Shirley (entry deadline: September 26). Entry forms, which are available for download (PDF file / Adobe Acrobat Reader required) , should be at area bowling centers.

C. Marie Brown was selected winner of the Bernice Bennie League Secretary of the Year Award for 2004. C. Marie bowls at Parkland Bowl and is secretary of the Lizzie's Kids league. She was presented a plaque, sash, and flowers at the WDCAWBA Annual Meeting held April 18 in Oxon Hill.
At this meeting, the WDCAWBA Roving Trophy was awarded to the St. Charles Bowling Center in Waldorf. This award is based on the percentage of leagues in the center to the number of members represented at the WDCAWBA Annual Meeting. The trophy will be displayed at St. Charles until the next year's annual meeting.

WDCAWBA receives BVL award — President Barbara Vaughan and Director Carol Gauthier accepted an award from Roger Dalkin, a director of BVL, for WDCAWBA having the largest contribution by a local association to BVL for the 2002-2003 season. This award was presented at the WIBC Annual Meeting in Wichita, Kan., on May 3.

USBC Plan of Merger approved — The USBC Plan of Merger has been approved. Both WIBC and ABC delegates approved the merger at their respective meetings. On May 5, WIBC President Sylvia Broyles announced that delegates at the WIBC Annual Meeting in Wichita, Kan., had voted to approve the plan of merger by a vote of 1748 to 716. A few minutes later, she announced the vote by ABC delegates had also voted to approve with a count of 898 to 274.

WIBC names representatives to USBC board — Tamoria Adams, Sylvia Broyles, Elaine Hagin, Linda Scott, Barbara Sonnier, and Rilla Yeater will sit on the board of directors of the newly formed United States Bowling Congress.

WIBC's Kuhn on plans for 2005 meeting — Following is a message from Roseann Kuhn, WIBC executive director: "We have been receiving many requests as to whether plans are being made for a WIBC meeting in Tulsa in 2005. Although WIBC will be formally dissolved on December 31, 2004, a committee has been appointed to develop plans to celebrate the Past, Present, and Future."

Deborah Holland was crowned "Suzy Bowler for 2004" during the March 6 opening ceremonies of the 59th annual WDCAWBA City Tournament at AMF Capital Plaza. She registered three more than the required four teams for the tournament, making her eligible for selection as Suzy Bowler.
Holland, who received a bowling ball, bag, and shoes from the center and won a free team entry into next year's tournament, will represent WDCAWBA at the November and April membership meetings and appear at the BVL Kickoff in November.
The first squad on opening day participated in a "Pick-Off" game. The first bowler was required to pick up the 5-pin only, second bowler the 7-pin only, and the third bowler the 10-pin only. If the first three bowlers accomplished this, the fourth bowler had to get a strike to make it a successful effort. The 2004 Women's International Bowling Congress (WIBC) Annual Meeting is scheduled for May 3-5 in Wichita, Kan,. where the delegates will be asked to vote on a revised proposal for the Single Membership Organization (SMO) to be known as the United States Bowling Congress (USBC). The revised resolution addresses four main issues:
The delegates also will select the site for the 2008 WIBC Annual Meeting and Tournament. The four cities being considered are Kansas City, Kan.; Detroit, Mich.; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and Reno, Nev.

Awards - WIBC has announced the elimination of the Pin Point program. Though the program will end beginning with the 2004-2005 season, all Pin Points currently banked and/or earned through July 31, 2004 will be honored until they expire. Questions regarding Pin Points should be directed to WIBC at 800/514-BOWL.
The WDCAWBA office will issue a new form that will allow secretaries to include national and local awards, except for honor scores, on a single form. This new form will be distributed with the 2004-2005 league kits.
WDCAWBA's 58th Semiannual Meeting was held November 2 at Hampton Inn, Alexandria. Founder and Life Member Bea Bennie and her daughter, Life Member Sharon Weber, conducted the installation ceremony for newly elected and appointed officers and directors.
Those honored by Ms. Bennie and Ms. Weber included Barbara Vaughan, president; Bernadine King, first vice president; Yvonne Humphries, second vice president; and Wendy Bruce, fourth vice president; and Colleen Kennerly, Carolyn Woodhouse, Sharon Brown, and Tavawyaha Batts, director.

WDCAWBA won the Matt Bennie 3 C's (Communication, Consideration, and Cooperation) Tournament held September 28 at Waldorf. This annual event, founded in the memory of Matt Bennie in 1984-the year after he died-was established to bring WDCAWBA, NCABA, Vir-Mar District YABA, and local proprietors together as a group to involve them in the sport of bowling and to get to know one another and have fun.
Bea Bennie, Matt's wife and the founder and a life member of our association, has continued this tournament in which each group bowls three games, vying for the honor of having their orgization's name engraved on the beautiful 3 C's plaque, with the winning group proudly displaying the plaque in its office space until the following year's event.
This year, the local leaders had a challenge, but WDCAWBA took top honors with a record score of 3,498, beating their nearest competitor by 189 pins.
Director Tavawyaha Batts won a beautiful clock for the highest single game over average for the women, while NCABA Associate Director Richard Brown Jr. won a similar award.
An additional highlight of this tournament was the celebration of Bea Bennie's 92nd birthday and her induction earlier this year into the WIBC Hall of Fame.

The NCABA/WDCAWBA Senior Tournament this year had its largest turnout ever. Participants ages ranged from 55 to 92 years young. First-time bowlers were presented a special "senior" pin. Pins also were awarded to those who bowled a 200 game, and bowlers earned a 4-Bagger patch for four strikes in a row. Several high scores were bowled.

Our 2003 WIBC champions, the "Country Gals" team from California, Md., that included Sandra Biehler (captain), Martha Chesley, Margaret Taylor, and Tang Mitchell, were presented WIBC pendants as winners of the Division 2 Team Event in the WIBC Tournament in Reno, Nev. President Barbara Vaughan, First Vice President Bernie King, and Director Tavawyaha Batts attended the ceremony at St Charles Bowl in Waldorf. WDCAWBA also presented the winners with a congratulatory cake that was shared with their league members.

The National Girls and Women in Sports Day will be celebrated at AMF Alexandria on Sunday, February 8, 2004. Fliers will be distributed to your bowling centers. This event is to promote athletic participation for the female gender of all ages. Each team will consist of an adult and youth. Together, they will bowl two games of scotch doubles. It will be another fun day.

Being an officer in a business is equal to being an officer in a league. We must have basic knowledge and use the guidelines that are set forth. At one time, league sanction money was accepted by receipt of a personal check from the league secretary and/or treasurer because this individual was a sanctioned bowler. Well, just like everything else, change takes place.
Now, the time has come, and our association's policy has changed this bowling season. WDCAWBA now requests that all league sanctions be submitted with a money order, cashier's check, or a league account check with two league officers' signatures. Upon the review of WIBC Rules 102e(1), (2), and 102f (1), we decided to help make operations consistent.
Last bowling season, WIBC submitted 11 suspensions to our association. This new policy will help eliminate future suspensions. Remember that any league member has the right to request review of the league's records, request a meeting, and, most importantly, bring charges against a league officer for non-compliance of rules.
Therefore, this change has been initiated to assist and protect our members.
League officers: Please forget about how long you have been a leader and remember, to be a good leader, you must review the rule book each season to ensure that you are complying with the rules. Take the time to review Rules 102c, 102d, 102e, and 102f. Do the right thing.

The WDCAWBA Semiannual Meeting will be held Sunday, November 2, 2003 at Hampton Inn-Old Town South, 5821 Richmond Highway in Alexandria. Registration begins at 10 a.m., and the meeting begins at 11. The agenda includes election of delegates to state and national conventions, installation of officers and directors, and presentation of certificates and pins to City Tournament champions. A light lunch will be served, and a side tournament (entry fee: $10) will occur at AMF Alexandria following the meeting. Please join us and meet our 2003-2004 board of directors.
Our change of command has taken place. With your vote of confidence, I have accepted the position of president of this great association, and I stand ready to face the challenge.
There will be a few other changes taking place on the board to make us more serviceable for you. However, we need the help of the membership to make this happen. We need people to serve on the board of directors or to assist the board. Board members are required to attend monthly board meetings and committee meetings as necessary.
This bowling season, we will "strive for excellence through innovation," as we make every effort to accomplish our mission, which is: To strive to instill leadership and respect for the WDCAWBA by maintaining the integrity and pride in membership without regard to race, color, religion, age, or national origin.
I urge you to get acquainted with the board of directors, and don't hesitate to call if you need us. Our telephone numbers are listed in the 2002-2003 WDCAWBA Annual Average Book.

It indeed has been an honor and pleasure for me to serve as your president for the past two years. I thank all of the members of the WDCAWBA for their tremendous support during my tenure. I especially thank the hardworking board of directors and the non-board members who served tirelessly on committees.
Barbara Vaughan will assume the presidency for the next three years. She and the dedicated and gifted board of directors are more than qualified to move the association to its next level of purpose. Therefore, I am confident that the WDCAWBA is in good hands, and I wish them every success.
We have passed many noteworthy milestones during my tenure. First and foremost, Bernice "Bea" Bennie, founder of the 58-year-old Washington, D. C. Area Women's Bowling Association, was inducted into the Women's International Bowling Congress Hall of Fame for meritorious service in Reno, Nev., on April 28, 2003.
Henry Fankhauser, bowling writer for the Prince George's and Montgomery Journals, received the National Women Bowling Writers Association's Albert E. Crowe Award for distinguished service to the game of American tenpins in Reno on April 27. Henry has promoted WDCAWBA and bowling through his work in print journalism for over 50 years. Henry has received many well-deserved accolades for his contributions to the sport of bowling; however, this was his first national recognition for service.
My most memorable experience occurred when I presented a first-place medallion to Sharon Ryon of Huntingtown, Md., for capturing the 2002 WIBC Championship Tournament Division II All Events. I was also delighted that Karyn Good of the District placed second in the 2002 Division III Singles Event.
This year, I am extremely pleased-and even a bit boastful-that we have another WIBC Championship team. The 2003 WIBC Division II champions are Mary Mitchell, Sandy Biehler, Donna Martin, Martha Chesley, and Margaret Taylor. Martin, who lives in Choctow, Okla., was a substitute. In 2001, four locals (Lorna Guzman, Sharen Kinney, Lori Bobish, and April Saunders) were on the "Together Again" team that finished first in Division I.
For a while, it looked as if we were going to have two championship teams in 2003. But, two days before the tournament ended, Felicia Terry, Angela Powell, LaJoye Lofland, Annie Hunt, and Sonja Debrew lost the Division I lead and finished second. Another hometown team, "Quiet Riot," rose to the challenge and tied for fourth place in Division II of this year's event.
As you can see, my time in office has been fulfilling, rewarding, and something to shout about! But now my time is up, and I thank you for yours. May God bless and keep you until we meet again.
Quite a bit has happened since the last issue. The big news: WIBC delegates didn't pass the Single Membership Organization (SMO) initiative to become the United States Bowling Congress (USBC). On May 13 via conference call, ABC proposed a panel composed of two members of each organization (ABC, WIBC, YABA, and USA Bowling) to renew efforts starting in June to unite the bowling industry by reviewing the existing Plan of Merger. The panel will recommend a course of action to take place no later than September. This will allow time to present a new plan to their respective boards in November and to delegates for consideration at their 2004 conventions.
Therefore, we need to re-think, re-examine, and reconsider our thoughts for the sport of bowling. Ask yourself, If not now, when? Poll your leagues or do a petition concerning this topic and submit it to the association office.
What did it cost? As an organization, it cost us the golden opportunity. It caused a setback, headaches, and heartaches. This rejection will still hit organizations in the pocket for services rendered and fewer members. Where will we be within the first decade of the 21st century?
What did we gain? Not a thing but another year to ponder. Where do we go from here? Take note that the industry is still looking at ways to preserve our sport. The leaders that were voted into office at ABC and WIBC are trying hard to share their foresight, but all some can see is space. Remember, nothing remains the same.
WDCAWBA member Carla Sessions presented petitions in support of SMO to WDCAWBA President Deloise Poindexter at the annual meeting on April 6, 2003. At the WIBC Convention, with petitions in hand, I spoke in favor of the Plan to Merger on behalf of our association. President Poindexter and Life Member Nell Horne Manning also spoke in favor of it. Kudos are extended to Carla Sessions for initiating the petition drive.
I personally believe that WIBC could have led us through this change process. A better understanding of USBC was given to the delegates at the convention; however, some could not see the big picture. I understand that change like this causes uncertainty and concern, but thinking positive and taking that first step could have led us through this change process. Organizational change is designed to sharpen our focus on our future. Are we making a difference?
If you would like to help make a difference, we need your help. There are several vacancies on the board, so please get involved. Submit an application. Show interest. Individuals are needed to assist board members present awards, so volunteer today.
Membership development is focused on in every organization. We need to do something to stop our membership from declining. This decline started before SMO; therefore, we also need your help to retain, recruit, and reclaim members.
Ladies: A bowling council has been established for Fort Belvoir Bowling Center. It meets on the third Sunday of each month at the bowling center, and the group's mission is to be a voice for the betterment of the center's bowlers. During the summer, the council will focus on repairs and improvements for the bowling center. If you have any concerns on this topic, please call 703/805-2991 for more information.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association recently announced the approval of women's bowling as a championship sport beginning with the 2003-04 school year.
Final averages for all winter leagues should have been submitted by now. The information will be compiled for the Annual Average Book, which should appear by mid-August.
Awards continue to be a hot topic. Since May 15, all associations may order awards and supplies online. If you should score exceptionally well and you're not sure if you are entitled to an award, ask the league secretary, look at a current rule book, or call the WDCAWBA office at 240/695-1985. The middle section of the Playing Rules book describes WIBC and ABC awards. Please use current copies of awards forms.
Congratulations are extended once again to Bea Bennie, who was inducted into the WIBC Hall of Fame in Reno, Nev., on April 28. One day earlier in Reno, Henry Fankhauser, bowling writer for the Prince George's and Montgomery Journals, received in absentia the National Women Bowling Writers Association's Alberta E. Crowe Award for distinguished service to the game of American tenpins.
We also are pleased to announce that Sharon Weber and Dawn Fay are our 2003 Hall of Fame inductees. Sharon will be inducted in the meritorious service category, and Dawn will be inducted for bowling achievement. The affair is scheduled for October 18.

Attention league secretaries: As our winter leagues are nearing completion, remember to complete your responsibility. Please comply with Rule 102e and submit final averages for them to appear in the Annual Average Book. Final averages must be received in the WDCAWBA office on or before June 17. Please submit the Final Average Request Form sent from the WDCAWBA office. Computer generated sheets will be accepted. If you have any questions, contact our association secretary Janet Prukop at 240/695-1985.
The last article published a list of leagues that were tardy in submitting sanctions. If any league was listed erroneously as being late, we truly apologize. As a reminder, league sanctions are to be submitted within 30 days from the start of the league. Awards are to be submitted within 20 days from date of performance.
Our National Girls and Women in Sports event has continually grown each year. Our event held February 9 at AMF Capital Plaza was our largest ever. There were 84 young ladies participating from the ages of 3 to 18. Each one had a female adult partner, and the playing rules were for scotch doubles. All four vice presidents and nine directors along with other female bowlers had a fun day. The top three winners in each category are as follows:
The winners received trophies, and medallions were given to all young participants. Refreshments were included for all.
Join us next year. The cameras will be ready. This is our way of giving back to the community and our fun day for future bowlers.
February was designated the "Bowl for the Cure" month. WIBC took on this challenge to help raise funds for breast cancer research on behalf of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. We had a league designate a night of league bowling.
On Saturday, Feb. 22, the 24-team Rudy Peters Twi-Light Mixed league at AMF Marlow Heights hosted its first Bowl for the Cure event. The entire bowling center was festively decorated in pink and white. There were tablecloths of color, streamers, pledge sheets, vital information, and colorful balloons on each table. Every member was supplied with a breast cancer pink ribbon to wear and an engraved ink pen that read "Rudy Peters Twi-Light Mixed Bowl for the Cure" to assist in the Strike Out Breast Cancer effort. It was suggested that each person who participated donate a penny per pin to Bowl for the Cure. Many members donated two pennies, and others contributed a flat amount.
The evening was a tremendous success, with approximately 85 percent of the league participating and raising $600. A committee that included Miriam Dixon (chairperson), Tavawyaha Batts, Traci Carroll, Sharon Johnson, Anne Pepper, and Dwayne Gleaton held several raffles to help raise funds. A total of 17 items were raffled. Some items included a one-hour bowling lesson, a beautiful Mary Kay gift basket, a single bowling ball bag and free bowling ball cleaning certificates, candy dishes, bowling towels, and many other great items.
As part of the festivities, an information table was set up with pamphlets and information obtained from the American Cancer Society. There were also information and personal stories from men who are breast cancer survivors.
The important message for the evening was that breast cancer does not just affect women and that anyone can be at risk. This event was not only to raise funds for breast cancer research; the primary focus was to bring awareness to this devastating disease.
Members of the Rudy Peters Twi-Light Mixed league gave a great deal of positive feedback about the event, and the league hopes to participate annually in this very worthwhile activity.
The 2003 WIBC Championship Tournament, which began March 20 and runs through July 9, is the largest ever, with a team total of 13,216. Are your bags packed and bowling balls ready to bring home a title? Will your photo be here next? If not this year, then let's start planning for the 2004 event in Wichita, Kansas.
Prior to the opening squad of WDCAWBA City Tournament March 8 at Bowl America Shirley, Linda L. Turcotte was announced as the new "Suzy Bowler." In addition to a crown, sash, and flowers, she received bowling shoes and a bag from Bowl America.
Finally, the Single Membership Organization (SMO) discussions are still hot. ABC delegates recently voted against the proposal, and WIBC delegates will vote on the issue April 29 in Reno, Nev. What will it be?

Three cheers for 2003. In January, we started making new resolutions. Let's be realistic and not make resolutions that last for a day. Let's celebrate with the spirit of determination, dedication, encouragement, and inspiration. All four terms can apply to life in general or even our bowling. WDCAWBA is determined to represent you well, dedicated to give our time, encouraged by the membership, and inspired by all fellow bowlers to achieve.

February is Bowl for the Cure Month. We all probably know someone personally affected by breast cancer. A very high number of cases have been diagnosed for women, but there are some case involving men. WIBC encourages bowlers to raise money and assist the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
League packets containing information on the Bowl for the Cure program were mailed in December. If your league did not receive a packet, simply visit bowlforthecure.com for the necessary forms and information or call 800/514-BOWL, ext. 3226.

Our BVL Kickoff started last November. Every league is asked to make a contribution. Representatives will try to visit every bowling center and every league. However, if your league is missed, please send donations to WDCAWBA, 4710 Auth Place, Suite 495, Camp Springs MD 20746. Every penny counts to care for those wounded and disabled servicemen. Keep it mind the troops that currently are being deployed.
Today, the contributions not only serve our hospitalized veterans but also outpatient veterans and other veterans in need.
For seven of the past eight years, WDCAWBA and NCABA together have led the nation for submitting the highest contribution. This accomplishment is achieved by your support. Thank you!

The 2003 PWBA Bowler's Club membership includes an official PWBA Tour Guide, a membership card, entitlement to merchandise discounts, a limited edition photo of the top five PWBA players, and an entry for a daily $100 prize giveaway.
Our association is starting another fund-raising endeavor. For every interested member can who signs up and indicates "WDCAWBA" on the form, our association will profit $4.

Who will be "Suzy Bowler"? Each year, we sponsor this contest. The winner will reign for one bowling season. To be selected, she must: (1) Organize and submit four or more WDCAWBA City Tournament team entries; (2) Be willing to represent WDCAWBA at both the November and April membership meetings; (3) Agree to attend the BVL Kickoff in early November; and (4) Participate in the crowning of the next season's Suzy Bowler at the opening ceremonies.
The 2003 Suzy Bowler will be crowned March 8 at the opening ceremonies of our tournament at Bowl America Shirley, 6450 Edsall Road in Alexandria. If you're not bowling, come out and meet the new Suzy Bowler and your board members.
The WIBC Championship Tournament will be invaded by more than 13,000 women in Reno, Nev., between March 20 and July 8, 2003, unless extended. The convention will be held April 28-30.
While we are there, we will mix some pleasure with our business. The October/November cover of BOWL Magazine included the announcement of Bernice "Bea" Bennie's election to the WIBC Hall of Fame. The official induction will occur April 28.
WDCAWBA will honor Ms. Bennie April 26 in the Prospectors Room at Harrah's Hotel, 219 N. Center Street in Reno. A reception will start at 5:30 p.m., with a buffet dinner at 6:30. The cost is $30, and dress is evening casual. Please RSVP by April 22 and join us at this gala event. Bea was very instrumental in the start our association and is still very active in our operations.
Also, while in Reno, the National Women Bowling Writers "Alberta E. Crowe Award" for distinguished service in the communication field will acknowledge the 2003 recipient, Henry Fankhauser, bowling writer for the Prince George's Journal.

League secretaries: It is imperative that you perform your duties in a timely manner. League sanctions are due in the association office no later than 30 days after the start of the league.
Listed below are the names and centers of leagues whose secretaries were more than 60 days late in fulfilling their elected duty. League presidents need to follow up on all league issues, and league members should keep this in mind at election time.

Merger is in the air!
Throughout bowling, we must prepare for the creation for a single membership organization (SMO), and we must be ready to meet challenges. Despite the decline we've had in membership, it's been noted that quite a few women have ABC cards. Under SMO, that will not be necessary.
After its November board meeting, WIBC agreed to join ABC, YABA, and USA Bowling on the proposed SMO. This approval by WIBC's board of directors shows the group's faith in the process and firm belief that this truly is in the best interest of organized bowling.
It also means that a motion at the 2003 WIBC Annual Meeting in Reno, Nev., to rescind the 2002 delegate action to delay the vote until 2004 will be presented. If that motion passes, the WIBC delegation will vote on the proposal April 29, 2003, and two-thirds of the delegates must approve it-as must two-thirds of the delegates at the ABC Convention in March in Knoxville, Tenn.
If this merger is approved, the transition would begin next summer. These merging organizations would create a new organization called the United States Bowling Congress (USBC), and it would begin operations January 1, 2004.

The 2003 WIBC Tournament will be held in March through July in Reno. Entries close January 4. At this time, there have been over 12,000 teams entered. You still have time to join us.
With the holiday season corner, remember to practice. They say practice will make it perfect, so let's try it and see what happens.
Family and friends are special people, so no matter where you go, visit the bowling centers and pro shops. You may purchase gifts for fellow bowlers, and everyone will start off having a Happy New Year.

Your bowling season has started. The fun has begun. Did you remember the important things?
Complete your sanction card and familiarize yourself with the league rules. Remember that every league is not the same. What frame is the cutoff for a tardy bowler? Do you establish an average or use the highest book average?
Do you have your things ready to roll? Check your bowling ball for wear and tear. Some don't bowl in the summer, so now is the time to visit your local pro shop and make some adjustments to ensure you have the proper fit. Check your bowling shoes and restock your bowling bag with those miscellaneous necessities. Practice and now bowl well in this new season.
Did we see you at the Hall of Fame Induction and Dinner Celebration? This was an enjoyable evening. You should attend and see for yourself.
Did you remember to enter in the WDCAWBA/NCABA Senior Tournament? This year the happenings are at AMF Marlow Heights on October 19-20 and 26-27. These seniors don't miss a beat. Watching them compete and have a good time makes you realize there still some fun in the game.
BVL is the Bowlers to Veterans Link. The government has set forth a date honoring veterans in November, but the bowlers' help is extended beyond one day. WDCAWBA and NCABA have excelled in collecting funds and recently were Number 1 in the nation for seven consecutive years, thanks to your generosity. The money is for the brave people who risked their lives for our freedom.
When an association representative visits your bowling center, please make a contribution. Have your league recognized. Use a portion of the 50/50 raffle, do a special collection, do pledge sheets on your score for a particular date, be creative, or just make a donation. Let's keep supporting America's veterans; they're in a league of their own. Our annual kickoff takes place November 2 at Fort Belvoir.
Remember to attend our Semiannual Meeting Nov. 3 at the Holiday Inn-Gaithersburg at 2 Montgomery Village Road (I-270 North to Exit 11). Registration is from 10-11 a.m.; the meeting and lunch will follow.
Our City Tournament will start March 8, 2003 and run for three weekends at Bowl America Shirley, 6450 Edsall Road in Alexandria. Applications will be in the bowling centers.
The 46th Virginia Women's Bowling Association Tournament in Christiansburg will run March 15 through May 25, 2003. It will be conducted on weekends only and hosted by the Golden Triangle WBA. The team event will occur at Triangle Lanes, and New River Valley Superbowl Lanes will host the singles and doubles events. Entries close January 15, 2003. Entry forms should be in the bowling centers.
Help support women's bowling. The Women's International Bowling Congress (WIBC) is assisting in the sponsoring of the Professional Women's Bowling Association Tour. PWBA kicked off a $50,000 sweepstakes that's loaded with cash prizes and membership benefits. Our association is now taking part in this sponsorship, and, with your help, some funds will come back to our association.
Applications for the PWBA Bowlers Club are available. If you should sign up online or if you received a renewal subscription, please indicate "Washington, D.C. Area WBA" below the signature line. The association will receive $4 for every subscription. Club membership entitles you to an Official PWBA Tour Guide, membership card, member discounts on merchandise, quarterly updates on tournaments, a photo of five PWBA players, plus discounts with Travelodge hotels and Avis car rentals. The promotion runs from March through December. Sweepstakes drawings for $100 take place daily, Monday through Friday. A total of $200 is given away on the last Friday of every month. On the 15th of every month, the lucky person will receive a PWBA Logo bowling ball and a free membership for next year. The grand prize drawing on Christmas Day will be $5,000. We already have some winners among us.
Single Membership Organization (SMO) is approaching fast. We are managing today for tomorrow's success. Unfortunately, times are changing for bowling, and both WIBC and the other membership organizations are going through some rough times. Membership has decreased, causing changes in the benefits. SMO will give us a better opportunity to position bowling as a leader in amateur sports.
Tradition is extremely important, but don't talk about how women will lose their identity when more of them purchase ABC cards. Now is the time to close that history book and start a new edition. The bowling associations' traditions will become a chain in linking all of bowling together. TEAM: Together Each Accomplish More. This SMO would be known as the United States Bowling Association (USBA).
We are in this for the love of the sport. Moving forward to SMO would increase benefits, including an increase in cost efficiency, better utilization of volunteers, improved services to members, and it would create a unified identify for our sport. SMO was addressed at the 2002 WIBC Annual Meeting and delayed, but new WIBC President Sylvia Broyles has announced that it will be on the agenda for the April 2003 convention if approved by the WIBC board in November.

After 68 years, ABC's Bowling Magazine has ceased publication. This decision was made for economic reasons. Subscribers will receive a copy of Bowlers Journal International for each of their remaining issues.

The sport of bowling is popular, but it's also one that is under reconstruction. Despite the decline in our association and national membership, the long-term outlook for bowling still faces many challenges.
Our membership organizations are moving toward creating one organization. The Single Membership Organization (SMO) initiative is being considered rather than the current four organizations (ABC, WIBC, YABA, and USA Bowling). It has been proposed that the unity be called the "United States Bowling Association" (USBA).
WIBC delegates voted to delay this initiative until 2004, and the WIBC board of directors was very disappointed with this action. However, all of the organizations are providing more information on this concept, and it may be addressed again at the 2003 conventions. All four organizations believe that everyone will benefit throughout the entire sport of bowling.

Our spotlight is shining on Ms. Emma Alexander, a member of the Thursday Night Mixed league at Bowl America Silver Spring-the center with the most representives at the WDCAWBA Annual Meeting. For that, Emma was presented with the Roving Trophy, and it will be on display at her center until next April.
You could make this happen, and the trophy could be at your bowling center. Please attend our meetings.

Our April 7 annual meeting was a very special day for getting acquainted with a new president, Delores L. Poindexter, for a new beginning, a new board entrance at the start of the meeting, a new seating arrangement, and most important, a new point of view. It was a great time and a meeting to remember. Below are some actions that have been made by vote or appointment.

The President's Award was a split decision this year. The honorees were Carolyn Jozwiak for her untiring efforts on everything and Jane Andrews for her quick response in the printing and distributing of our City Tournament flyers. Each woman received a lovely engraved eagle figurine.
We had approximately 15 first-time meeting attendees. Please mark your calendars for our November and April meetings. All members are invited. Get involved!

After our annual meeting, Patty Guyer, who had two months remaining in her term as treasurer, had a change of heart and resigned effective May 1. Since Anita Barila recently had been elected treasurer, the board concurred with an immediate appointment of Anita to her new position.

Now for some updates from the 2002 WIBC Convention that took place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin:

During the legislative session, Amendment J-11 (Rule 319b, Assigned Averages) was adopted. This rule is very important because our area has the multiple membership fee. To bowl in our City Tournament, an individual must have an established average or bowl in a sanction league within our jurisdiction.
Well, now for a regular tournament, a bowler having no acceptable entering average under the tournament rules shall bowl scratch unless the rules provide that an average will be assigned. If the rules so provide, the assigned average established by rule shall not be less than 165 for women and 170 for men. A bowler in an ABC/WIBC senior tournament, in which all entrants must be 55 years of age or more, may be assigned an average in accordance with the figure established by tournament rules. (Reason for proposal: Participation may be increased by allowing tournaments the flexibility to have a rule more realistic to their bowling ability. In addition, non-members may be encouraged to pay the participation fee and receive limited benefits in the tournament, which could possibly lead to future membership.)

One of the most critical issues that impede the implementation of productivity is extensive change. However, change is inevitable.
A different perspective has taken place within our association. Our president is now Deloise L. Poindexter, better known as "Dee." I know you're probably saying that this name seems familiar. Ms. Poindexter was first vice president for approximately six months at the beginning of this season. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Judy Edwards stepped down, and Dee stepped up.
Dee previously served 12 years on the WDCAWBA board as a director. She has always endured challenges, and our new leadership hopes to gain board confidence along with membership participation in everything-in evaluating existing matters, consideration on human factors, feasibility, limitations, and challenges will be addressed. WDCAWBA is proud of our place and prepared for the future.

King resigns - Our board has received another resignation: Fourth Vice President Rosilyn King stepped down from her post as of March 1.

A year of challenges - Some of the earlier challenges we faced were military bases closing and leagues having to change locations or just drop out for this bowling season of 2001-2002. This may cause a decrease in membership, but we are still committed and staying focused on the concerns of the membership. We, the board members, are here to provide the services and deliver the representation you want and deserve.
Now, it's time you do your share.

Suzy Bowler - Do you know who the new "Suzy Bowler" is? Did you see her get crowned?
News flash: Our 2002 Suzy Bowler is Terry L. Sanford-Waldon. A newlywed, she and her husband, Sean Waldon, an avid bowler, reside in Alexandria. Terry has been an administrative assistant for the Navy Budget Office for 14 years. She was among those at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. Praises go up and blessings come down that she is still with us today.
She has bowled for 12 years and currently bowls in the Saturday Night Mixed and the Pete Gunn leagues at AMF Seminary. Her highest average has been 171. She has even cashed in numerous tournaments. Her husband has helped her to read the lanes faster, make adjustments, and change equipment.
