PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE / Bill Grover

November 2004

Not you again!

Your leagues have started, and hopefully things are going smoothly. By now, you should be back in your bowling routine: rush home from work, grab a bite to eat, and head out to the center.

You put your shoes on and then hear that announcement again: Your lane director is here tonight to collect for the BVL. The results are varied. Some of you reach in your pockets and give generously to a very good cause. Some try and hide down in the settee area. You should know by now that doesn’t work—we will eventually find you. Others just say no, and that’s fine, too.

Those of you who bowl different nights or in several centers hear that announcement often during this time of year and greet the lane director with, “Not you again!” At least, I hope you hear the announcement. If not, please ask your lane director when he plans to collect for BVL.

Our nation has been at war these past several years, and the veterans hospitals contain many new veterans who have been wounded in the battles that have been fought. Please be especially generous when you donate to the BVL this year. Our veterans appreciate your contributions.

I promised to keep you up to date on our plans for the transition to the United States Bowling Congress (USBC), which officially comes into existence on January 1, 2005. Our association’s Single Membership Organization (SMO) Committee has met three times in preparation for the transition. Now that we feel we have a good grasp of the situation, we will meet with a similar committee of the Washington, D.C. Area Women’s Bowling Association to pursue the possibility of a merger of the two associations. Then there will be meetings with the other players involved: the Severna Park and Fredericksburg Women’s bowling associations and the Vir-Mar-Dist and Chesapeake YABA associations.

Delegates from our association attended the Virginia State Jamboree at Collinsville the weekend of Sept. 11-12. At that meeting, our bid for the 2006 State Tournament was successful. The tournament will be held at Bowl America Chantilly (team event) and Bowl America Manassas (singles and doubles).

Please make plans to bowl in the Virginia State Tournament, in addition to our NCABA Championship Tournament, which will take place at Bowl America Shirley (team event) and Bowl America Woodbridge (singles and doubles).
