EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MEMO / Ray Brothers

Summer 2003

DQ appeals process delays
Championship Tournament prize checks

Many of you have contacted me to ask when we are going to send out the checks for the recent NCABA Championship Tournament. Unfortunately, eight participants were disqualified for violating ABC Rules 319d and 319e, and three appealed the action to Bowling Headquarters in Greendale, Wis. ABC’s rules department recently upheld the disqualifications, but all three bowlers appealed that decision to ABC’s legal committee, which will not meet until July.

When we get the final word, we will print the checks and get them in the mail. Check this site for the latest tournament information and for the complete prize list.

This incident hopefully will alert all tournament bowlers to familiarize themselves with the provisions of ABC/WIBC Rules 319d and 319e. If the provisions of these rules are followed, bowlers will not have any problems.

The summer season is underway at most of the centers. Just a reminder: Those who paid sanction fees last summer do not have to pay until the 2003-2004 season begins on August 1, 2003.

All of the winter leagues have completed their schedules, and secretaries are reminded that final 2002-2003 averages for your bowlers are due at the association office by June 20. ABC/WIBC Rule 102e sets forth the responsibilities of league secretaries.

I recently received an appeal of the action of a league’s board of directors. The league set makeup sessions for scheduled matches that were cancelled because of weather. One team could not make the makeup session and informed the league president, who said that it was OK to postpone those games. The president did not appear at the makeup session and did not inform anyone of her actions.

The league, assuming that the team was not showing up, forfeited the games. The team forced to forfeit protested the league’s action and was granted the postponement by the league’s board of directors.

The appeal was denied because the team granted the postponement had earlier discussed the matter with the president, who is someone in authority in the league, and was told it was OK.

If you have a rule you would like me to discuss in this column, please contact me and I will explain it.

I hope that your bowling is improving and you are enjoying yourself.

Have a great summer.
