Championship Tournament in progress;
getting ready for summer

The 58th annual Nation’s Capital Area Bowling Association Championship Tournament is under way at Bowl America Chantilly (team event) and Bowl America Falls Church (doubles and singles). At the opening squad of the team event March 29, all teams had an opportunity to win $250 by knocking down the 7-, 8-, 9-, and 10-pins in the order as instructed. If a team made it through the first phase, the third bowler then had to get three pins out of a full rack.

Five teams made it to second phase. However, none was able to knock down just three pins. Nonetheless, each of the five teams received $50 for its stellar efforts.

We are gearing up in the office for the end of the winter season and the beginning of the summer season. Summer league kits are being made up, and final averages are being entered into the computer. League secretaries are requested to use the forms sent to them so that the process goes a little faster and we can get the Annual Average Book in the secretaries’ hands before their leagues start.

I have received many calls from leagues concerning individuals electing not to bowl because of inclement weather. Some bowlers who braved the weather and showed up at the league session want to force the more timid bowlers to forfeit their games for the night. ABC’s policy is that you cannot forfeit games due to inclement weather. What one person considers a dangerous situation may not be to someone else. We don’t want to get our fellow bowlers injured.

In March, we attended the ABC Convention in Knoxville, Tennessee. As you have probably heard, the delegates turned down the Single Membership Organization. The WIBC delegates will vote April 29 whether to approve the merger and join with YABA and USA Bowling to form the United States Bowling Congress. It was explained by lawyers and others that this proposal cannot be brought before the ABC delegates again. It will be interesting to see what happens with this issue.

If you have any questions about anything bowling-related, feel to call or E-mail me. If don’t know the answer, I will find out for you—if there is an answer!
