MANAGER’S MEMO / Ronald McGregor
March 2015
Current and future issues to consider
Here are some issues to consider:
1. I am hopeful that your league has completed at least one audit of the league finances—better to be safe than sorry.
2. This is the time of the season when weather can disrupt the league schedule, so please err on the side of safety and allow for postponements and makeup games. A postponement committee avoids the possibility of favoritism.
- a. Bowlers are allowed to ask for a postponement if they participate in the USBC Championships, the local or state championship tournaments, or an annual meeting.
- b. Rule 111b states a league cannot adopt a rule that would prohibit any prebowling/postponements when a team is unable to field a legal lineup due to item 2a above.
3. Have you considered where you are going to bowl next season? Has you league talked with center management regarding the contract for next season?
4. Tournament season is in full swing, starting with a very successful Mixed Scratch Doubles event recently completed at Bowl America Fairfax.
- The 52nd Annual Youth Championship Tournament will be held two weekends through March 8 at Bowl America Falls Church.
- The 70th Annual Open Championship Tournament will begin March 28 and end April 19. Events will be held at Bowl America Fairfax and Bowl America Woodbridge, so come on out and let’s make this a big time event; there is something for bowlers of all ages and abilities to participate in this year. Entry blanks can be found on our association Web site and Facebook pages and should be available in your centers.
5. If your league has had a team drop out for some good reason, do you know how you are to handle the loss of prize money? How much money is owed to the bowler(s) who paid into the prize fund for weeks and had to withdraw?
We get a lot of calls on this very subject every year, so be ready with a plan. You will find Rule 117b/8 helpful.
