August 5, 1993: Top seed Gene Stus fails to capture his third consecutive victory at Cal Bowl in Lakewood, Calif., when he loses to John Handegard, 221-199, in the title match of the Pacific Cal Bowl PBA Senior Open.


August 5, 1987: Mark Roth tosses a 785 three-game series, including a 299 game, en route to winning his 33rd PBA title at the Buffalo Open in Cheektowaga, N.Y. He put down leader Chris Warren, 259-215, in the championship match.


August 5, 1980: Jim Godman becomes the 21st player to win as many as 10 PBA titles when he defeats Pete Couture, 201-167, in the deciding game of the Quad Cities Open in Davenport, Iowa. The victory is Godman's first in seven years and his last on the national tour.
